Pavitra Wanniarachchi assumed office as the new Irrigation Minister at the Minister’s office located in the Mahaweli Authority Building yesterday morning.

After accepting the appointment, the letter was handed over to Ministry Secretary U.D.C Jayalal.

A discussion was held with Ministry officials about the future work programme of the ministry. Minister Pavitra Wanniarachchi said to the officers:President Ranil Wickremesinghe has entrusted a great responsibility to me.

The Minister emphasized that a programme should be planned to expand the agricultural production, mainly paddy next year.

The Minister said that a short-term and long-term work plan should be set up to provide solutions to the problems affecting the entire farming community including Mahaweli areas.

She requested the officials to work together as a ministry for this and to give full support to me as the Minister.

Irrigation State Minister Shashindra Rajapaksa, State Minister Siripala Gamlath, Polonnaruwa District MP Jagath Samarawickrama and others participated in this event.
