Prison guard with contraband for prisoner arrested

A prison guard who tried to smuggle two mobile phones, tobacco and other prohibited substances to a prisoner convicted to a life sentence in the ward A-3 of the Welikada Prison was arrested yesterday (31) morning by the officers of the Prison Emergency Response and Tactical Force (Prison Intelligence).

A relative of the prisoner’s family has brought this parcel near the main gate of Welikada Prison to give it to the Prison officer, as a parcel brought by a well-known courier service. The prison guard tried to escape when the officers of the Prison Emergency Response and Tactical Force who were on duty at the Welikada prison entrance enquired about the parcel. During the search conducted by the officers of the Prison Emergency Response and Tactical Force, they found two mobile phones, a charger and ten cigarettes.

The prisoner who was sentenced to life imprisonment had made a phone call to the prison guard involved in the incident from inside the prison. The Prison Department has started an investigation in this regard.
