Probe on alleged assault of special needs children at private school

An investigation has been launched in relation to a complaint made to the President’s Office that a teacher of a private school run for children with special needs in Katugastota, Kandy, is assaulting and harassing in various ways, the children studying there. This investigation has commenced on the instructions of the Central Province Governor Lalith U. Gamage in relation to a letter sent to the President’s Office by a child’s parents stating that a formal investigation was not conducted by the Office of the Director of Early Childhood Development regarding an incident of assault of a child being educated in this school.

The Pathadumbara Divisional Secretariat has also conducted an investigation and made recommendations regarding the activities taking place at this school, but no formal action has been taken so far.

Governor Gamage said that a committee has been appointed to investigate complaints related to the unpleasant experiences of the children with special needs at this school.

Investigations carried out as of now have revealed that this school has not been registered with any Government agency in the Central Province in order to run a school for children with special needs.
