The calls and messages that threatened three Election Commission Members to death had come from Dubai and from the same number, Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said.
Speaking to the Media yesterday, he said that Election Commission Members S.B.Divaratne, K.P.P Pathirana and M.M. Mohamed have been provided armed security by the relevant Police Divisions.
Members Divaratne and Pathirana received death threats on January 18, asking them to resign from the Commission immediately. While the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was conducting investigations on them, Commission Member Mohamed also received death threats on Friday night. Divaratne too had received a suspicious call again on Friday, but he had not responded to it. Later, he had received WhatsApp messages with death threats. Both Divaratne and Mohamed had complained to the Police and the CID.
“When the CID traced the number it was found out that the individual, under whose name it was registered, is no longer in Sri Lanka, and that he was not aware about them. The CID will conduct the investigations coordinating with the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority. We are not yet aware who made those calls,” SSP Thalduwa said.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission said that the Postal Vote of the Local Government Elections would be scheduled for two days in mid-February.
