Prof. Essella’s team wins Australia’s Eureka Award

The research group led by renowned Professor of Communication Security and Space Science Karu Essella, has won the Eureka Award presented by the Department of Defence for the innovations made for the defence of Australia.

This Eureka Award, which is also known as the Oscar of Australian Science has been given by the Australian Museum annually since 1990.

They received this award for developing an energy-efficient, simple controllable antenna system for the Australian military in critical situations in a military environment. This can transmit large volumes of data and is capable of monitoring suspicious radio waves over a wide area without being noticed by enemies. Prof. Karu is a specialist in electromagnetic and antenna engineering at the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia, and he received his first degree from the Moratuwa University.

He was also awarded Australia’s National Professional Engineer of the Year award in 2022. Sri Lankans Manik Atigala and Dr. Dushmantha Thalakotuna and Indianl Khushbu Singh were the other members of Prof. Karu’s team.
