A two-day workshop to educate provincial journalists about the consequences of false information in cyberspace was held recently at the Hector Kobbekaduwa Training Centre.

Fifty provincial journalists selected from nine provinces participated in this two-day workshop.

Training was given to provincial reporters on the ethics and legal regulations of information reporting through mass media. Also, the participants were given formal training on reporting information based on gender, as well as on the legal regulations to be followed in reporting news about children and women through social media.

The workshop was organised by Journalism Forum, Journalists Cooperative Society and Our Voice Journalists’ Union while it was financially supported by Search for Common Ground, the Media and Law Collective and the British High Commission.

The threats to the survival of women and children in the reporting of information through mass media were also discussed. Speakers emphasised the need for a serious level of discussion on gender.

The participants also received practical training and a certificate.
