“Ramya Wanigasekara was a commentator and actress who faced challenges fearlessly”

President Ranil Wickremesinghe in a condolence message said the late Ramya Wanigasekara who became a radio commentator in the ’80s, performed the role of an actress as well as a professional commentator while facing various challenges and criticisms.

The condolence message issued by the President was read by Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana at her cremation ceremony on Sunday at the Borella General Cemetery.

“Ramya was an artiste who demonstrated her talents in many fields. We first met her as a stage actress. At a young age, she was assigned to play adult roles on stage. It is a challenging task. But she faced those challenges fearlessly.

“There was also a time when she faced harsher criticism. It was in the early ’80s when she was hired as a radio announcer. Strong criticism was made that she had political backing. She endured all this and performed her duty diligently.

“History has now confirmed that the decision taken by the radio authorities at that time was 100 percent correct. The whole country has accepted that she performed the duties of an actress as well as a professional presenter well,” the President said.

Minister Dr. Gunawardhana, speaking at the funeral, said the late Ramya Wanigasekara’s natural voice and personality has been marked forever as a precedent in the history of news broadcasting in Sri Lanka.

“We all know that her talents, skills and creative abilities were dedicated to fulfilling her duties with utmost commitment and responsibility throughout her life,” he added.

“As a presenter, she had a very accurate, clear, simple but sharp voice. She deserves the praise of the entire nation for the service she rendered to the Sri Lankan commercial broadcasting industry,” he added.

Politicians, artistes, journalists and family members of the late Ramya Wanigasekara attended.
