Rangiri Dambulla National School Girls hockey team wins Gold Star Award

Rangiri Dambulla National School, a lesser known School in Sports, commenced the game Hockey in June last year 2022. Principal Janaka Wijesinghe, who was a reputed Hockey player from St. Thomas College Matale started Hockey in this School by appointing Maheshika De Silva as the MIC to look into the interest of the game on behalf of the younger generation to take up playing Hockey.

In August 2022, Principal Janaka Wijesinghe appointed Naveen Mayura Katudeniya as the Hockey Coach to guide these young lasses and he started to form an under 14 Girls team with the help of the Principal, Janaka Wijesinghe and MIC Maheshika De Silva. In the first participation, at a Schools Hockey tournament held on the 31st September and 01st October 2022, organised andconducted by the Matale District Hockey Association played in Matale, Rangiri Dambulla National School Girls Hockey team was awarded as the best disciplined team at this tournament.

In the same year, they got an opportunity to participate at the under 14 all Island Girls Hockey tournament, which was held from the 3rd to 5th December 2022, organised and conducted by the Sri-Lanka Schools Hockey Association, under the supervision and guidance of the Ministry of Education played at Rangiri Dambulla, Rangiri Dambulla National School Girls under 14 Hockey team showcased their talents to win a Gold Star award at this all Island Girls Hockey tournament 2022, beating Vijaya College Matale by 2 goals to nil, Siri Seevali Vidyalaya by 4 goals to nil and holding Seethadevi Balika Vidyalaya to a nil all draw, which is remarkable achievement displayed by these young lasses in the Sport Hockey concerned.

Pushpakumari, D.M D.G.V.V. Dissanayake, S.G.M.T. Sathsarani, H.M.I.G.S. Herath, M.G.M S. Bandara
