Ranil cautions Opposition against criticising IMF agreement

0 5

Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday that the Opposition should always criticise the country’s economy within the framework of IMF agreement.

“I accept that the Opposition is there to criticise. That is not a problem. Normally, an Opposition is not going to praise a Government. But I would like to remind the Opposition that such criticism should be made within the framework of the IMF agreement,” he added.

The former President making a special statement further said that neither the Government nor the opposition has the ability to work outside the IMF framework.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) had estimated the country’s economic growth at two percent in 2024. I wanted to increase that growth rate further.

“Therefore, since the beginning of the year, we have encouraged the public and businessmen to increase capacity building. As a result, our economic growth rate has reached five percent today. I thank everyone in the Finance Ministry, the Central Bank and the Presidential Secretariat who worked for this achievement”.

“We should also thank all those who worked to further increase the country’s capacity building. Since the country’s gross domestic product has increased, we have also received some of it as tax revenue. That also led to an increase in our income.

“We were able to do all this within the framework of the agreement with the IMF. Therefore, it is necessary to protect and continue that agreement. Neither the Government nor the Opposition has the ability to exit that agreement. If we do so, economic problems will arise in this country again.

The former President said that Sri Lanka is preparing to issue new international bond coupons before December 20 and that all related activities are now completed.

“All we have to do now is issue a declaration that we have come out of bankruptcy. After that, the banks will also take the necessary relief measures.”

He said that at the same time, relief must be provided to the people. “We have talked about this before,”he said.
