Rat fever suspected in Jaffna youth’s death

Authorities suspect Leptospirosis, commonly known as ‘rat fever’ is the cause of the death of a 23-year-old man from Jaffna on Saturday, which if confirmed, brings the death toll due to the illness in the last few days in the district to eight.

The youth, who was admitted to the Point Pedro Base Hospital due to fever, was transferred to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital for further treatment, but died on Saturday.

Hospital sources said that the youth showed symptoms of rat fever and his body samples will be sent to Colombo for further tests.

In the past few days, seven people have died due to rat fever in Jaffna.

Currently 70 people with rat fever symptoms are receiving treatment at hospitals in the Jaffna district.
