Ratnapura Tamil Maha Vidyalaya, which has been under the threat of landslides since 2020, will be relocated in the Ratnapura New Town promptly.

Sabaragamuwa Provincial Governor Champa Janaki Rajaratne stated the school will be relocated as an urgent project so as to protect the lives of students and the staff. Accordingly, the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council has taken steps to establish this school on a five-acre plot of land in Ratnapura New Town.

The Governor stated this while participating in the annual cultural concert held by the Ratnapura Tamil Maha Vidyalaya at the Ratnapura Town Hall on Tuesday (19).

“After I assumed office as the Governor of Sabaragamuwa, I called the principals of all the Tamil schools in the Sabaragamuwa Province and discussed the issues. Among the issues that arose was that Ratnapura Tamil Maha Vidyalaya, located near the Ratnapura town, was subject to landslides,” the Governor said, at the event. Ratnapura Tamil Maha Vidyalaya, which is about 90 years old, consists of Advanced Level classes in Arts, Commerce, Science, and Mathematics streams in the Tamil medium.

The Sabaragamuwa Governor also said that the similarities and differences in cultural elements among different ethnic communities are a great help in bringing people closer together.

A total of 623 students are studying in the school and it is special that all of them participated in various cultural events, including dances and songs, at this art festival and cultural concert. Cultural elements of ethnic communities such as Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, the English, and the Japanese were included.

Provincial Education Ministry Secretary Chamara Bamunaarachchi, Principal E. Ravi and a group of others were present.
