Records rain from Nepal Cricket team

The Sri Lanka women’s cricket team, led by Chamari Athapaththu, who won the silver medal in the women’s cricket event at the 19th Asian Games, is scheduled to return to Sri Lanka tonight (28).

Notably, Sri Lanka won an Asian Games medal after 9 years, and this is the third medal won in the cricket event at this Games. Earlier in 2014, the Sri Lanka men’s cricket team had won the gold medal and the women’s team had won the bronze medal.

Meanwhile, the Nepalese team managed to renew the cricket record book in the first match against Mongolia by starting the men’s matches of the cricket event yesterday. Nepali batsmen recorded the highest score (314/3), fastest century and half-century scored by a team in this match held at the University of Technology cricket ground in Sejang under the T20 format.

In yesterday’s match, Nepal scored 314 runs for the loss of 3 wickets at the end of 20 overs, and Afghanistan, who previously held that record, scored 278 runs against Ireland in 2019. Kushal Malla, coming in at No. 3, scored the fastest century in T20I in 34 balls. With that, the records held by South Africa’s David Miller and India’s Yuvraj Singh in 35 balls were erased. By the end of the innings, he had scored 137 runs off 50 balls with 8 fours and 12 sixes. Dipendra Singh Airee managed to erase Yuvraj Singh’s record in 12 balls by collecting 50 runs in 9 balls. Captain Rohit Paudel scored 61 runs in 27 balls, he shared a 193-run third-wicket partnership with Kushal in 63 balls. It went down in the records as the best third-wicket partnership in a Twenty20 match.

The Nepali team hit 26 sixes in their innings and also held the record for most sixes in a T20I innings. They went past Afghanistan’s record of 22 sixes against Ireland back in 2019.

In reply, the Mongolian team was bowled out for 41 runs in 13.1 overs, and Davaasuren Jamyansuren was the highest scorer of the innings with 10 runs. Nepal won by 273 runs, which became the record for the biggest winning margin ever in a men’s Twenty20 International. It was a special occasion that Mongolian players made their international debut in this match.

Meanwhile, Japan managed to win by 3 wickets in the second match against Cambodia.

Swimming

In yesterday’s swimming event, Ganga Seneviratne finished fifth in the second heat of the Women’s 100m Backstroke event, with a time of 1:07.21 minutes. Ganga, who failed to reach her best performance (1:04.08) in this event, was ranked 20th overall out of the 27 athletes.

Chess

Susal Thewjan, who participated in the 8th round of the chess event yesterday, lost to the Filipino player. Then, in the 9th round, Susal had to compete with a Kyrgyz player, where he won that match. With that, Susal got 15th place out of a total of 34 players. The gold medal went to China, while the silver and bronze medals went to Uzbekistan players.

Today on the field

Niraj Wijewardana is going to compete in the boxing event under the weight class of 63 kg. He was not included in the initial squad named for this tournament but was able to participate in the Asian Games due to the intervention of Maxwell de Silva, the Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee. In addition to swimming, Mathew Abeysinghe and Akalanka Peiris will join the preliminary rounds of the 50m Butterfly event, while Sri Lankan players will compete in the Golf and Esports events.

The Espots team includes Chamuditha Dharmasiri, Mohammad Rizvi, Ramesh Fernando and Mohammad Riham, while T. Tharangaraja, Mithun Perera, Anura Rohana and K. Prabagaran will join the Golf team.
