The Police yesterday stated in the first month of 2025 road accidents and related deaths and injuries have gone down significantly compared to the same period last year. Police Spokesman SSP Buddika Manathunga speaking to media yesterday attributed the reason for the above to enhanced traffic surveillance by the police.
He said there were 129 road accidents from January 1 to January 25 this year, a reduction of 26 accidents compared to the same period last year, which was 155 road accidents. The number of fatalities from these accidents has also decreased by 26 compared to the previous year.”
On December 22, 2024, the Sri Lanka Police launched a special vehicular strategy. As part of this initiative, police officers dressed in civilian attire were deployed to educate drivers of public transport about violations. Additionally, they removed any hazardous parts attached to public transport vehicles that could pose a danger to passengers and pedestrians. A three-month grace period was granted for vehicle owners to present non-hazardous decorative parts to the Motor Traffic Department for certification by their technical officers. Once certified as non-hazardous, these parts could be included in the vehicle’s registration certificate, or, if not certified, they would need to be removed, he added.
