Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) activist Renuka Dushyantha Perera has filed a Writ Petition challenging the eligibility of Minister Ananda Wijepala to continue as a Member of Parliament (MP).
The Petitioner is seeking an order declaring that Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala is disqualified from serving as an MP, and is therefore not entitled to hold office as an MP.
The Petitioner alleged that Minister Wijepala, while serving as an MP, was appointed Chief of Staff to the President, thereby effectively becoming a Public Officer. The Petitioner argued that this appointment disqualifies Minister Wijepala from sitting and voting in Parliament, as holding Public Office constitutes entering into a contract of employment with the State, which violates Constitutional provisions governing MPs’ eligibility.
