A revitalization programme for Homagama Watareka Prison School will be implemented soon, Minister of Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms, Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said.

The Minister expressed these views while attending a special observation of the prison work camp at Homagama Watareka and Suneetha Vidyalaya, which is run for the young convicts.

In 2014, when Dr. Bandula Gunawardena was the Minister of Education, Sunitha Vidyalaya under the Ministry of Education was established with the aim of increasing the educational facilities for young convicted offenders.

A small group of inmates are currently engaged in education in this school, which has all the infrastructure including a computer lab with 40 computers, a language lab with 20 computers and a maths lab.

The Minister stated that by further utilizing the resources in the camp, steps will be taken to implement an urgent programme to provide educational and vocational training to a group of 200 young convicts. In addition to school education activities, the necessary facilities will be created for this group to achieve NVQ qualifications. Minister of Transport, Highways and Mass Media Dr. Bandula Gunawardena, Minister of State for Justice and Prison Affairs Anuradha Jayaratna and Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya were among those attended.
