Road caves in near Katugastota Polgolla reservoir

Due to heavy rains, a part of Dutugemunu Mawatha, near the Katugastota Polgolla Reservoir, has sunk in, near Wagolla.

Residents of the area said that a part of the road towards the Mahaweli river sank yesterday morning (22) due to continuous rain. Due to this, traffic on the road between Polgolla and Aruppola, Lewella has come to a complete halt.The remaining portion of the road is also in danger of sinking into the Mahaweli river.

Meanwhile, traffic on the road from Gannoruwa to Katugastota was severely disrupted due to the fall of a large rock near Halloluwa Seema Malakaya.

The Kandy District Disaster Management Unit has taken steps to temporarily evict fifty people living in five houses to a hall of the Rangala Tamil Primary School due to the risk of landslides in line rooms, near the Rangala Tea Factory.

As the Kotmale Reservoir is close to overflow level, its sluice gates are likely to open automatically, as a result, residents of Nugawela, Riverston Ulapane, Gampola, Weligalla,

Gelioya, Peradeniya and Katugastota, which are below the Kotmale Oya, have been notified by the Mahaweli Authority to be careful when using water from the Mahaweli River.
