Rohini asks JVP if country’s problems can be solved by legalizing prostitution

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Rohini Kaviratne on Saturday questioned the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) leadership whether the country’s problems could be solved by legalizing prostitution. She was responding to statements made by several JVP politicians that if a JVP-led government comes to power prostitution will be legalized.

The SJB MP said bankrupt political parties such as the National People’s Power (NPP) are engaging in cheap politics making use of the sufferings of the people of this country.

Slamming the recent statement made by a NPP representative on the promotion of prostitution in Sri Lanka, which Kaviratne said is a ‘brutal statement’, she said that prostitution does not make any positive impact on the national economy of Sri Lanka.

She said that it is only the SJB that has the practical plans to get women involved in the national economy while empowering them through reasonable means.

MP Kaviratne made these remarks addressing the SJB women’s rally held under the patronage of Opposition Leader and SJB Leader Sajith Premadasa in Kandy on Saturday (24).

Addressing the Kandy District women activists of the party, she said some political parties are using the anger and the frustration of the youth to promote their political campaigns. But, they have failed to present a proper programme to address these issues.

Therefore, she said, those parties should not be allowed to use the youth for their ulterior motives.

Opportunism or cunning is the political vision of the JVP, Kaviratne said.

“I don’t see a difference between them and the terrorist groups,” she said.
