SLPP Kalutara District Leader MP Rohitha Abeygunawardena on Saturday paid tribute to the people of the area for the support given to him during his last 27 years in politics.
Addressing a large gathering at a ceremony to mark Abeygunawardena completing 27 years in politics, the SLPP MP said he had invited the leader of the country to the ceremony to show his respect and appreciation to the people of Kalutara.
Abeygunawardena addressing the event said, “I welcomed the nation’s President here as a token of appreciation to the people of Kalutara, as they have consistently given me strength and strived to elevate me. My political journey wasn’t without its challenges; it was replete with heartaches, setbacks, and losses. However, I was never abandoned by the people gathered here.
“I listened to the people, which is how I came to be unbeaten for 27 years here. Even if I’m not a professor or have a college degree, we are studying politics as we work in this field. We have an obligation to carry out the tasks that our instructor, Basil Rajapaksa has assigned us.
“Mahinda Rajapaksa is my political idol. I am here to give him the support I can provide with my strength as well as the strength to create a new Mahinda for the country.
“Twice in the wake of the Coronavirus and terrorism, the Rajapaksa family has saved the lives of Sri Lankan citizens. “I will continue working with my party to fulfil my obligations to the citizens of this nation.”
