Royal-Thomian Regatta on Saturday

The 52nd annual regatta sponsored by Fondre for the T Noel Fernando Memorial Trophy between Royal College and S. Thomas’ College is set to take place at the Colombo Rowing Club, Beira Lake on Saturday, October 21.

This rowing competition, known as the Royal-Thomian Regatta, has been a tradition since 1962 when it started as the Royal-Thomian Boat Race. In 1966, it got its current name. It’s a big deal for both Royal College and S Thomas’ College and is one of the oldest events they compete in, ranking just behind the Battle of the Blues cricket and the Rugby Series.

This year, Sarith Abeysirigunawardena will lead the Royal College rowing team, while Chevon Perera will lead the rowers from S Thomas’ College. S Thomas’ College is the defending champion after winning last year’s Regatta with a score of 42 points to Royal College’s 10.

The Royal-Thomian Boat Race Trophy goes to the winners of the Boat Race, and the T Noel Fernando Memorial Trophy is awarded to the overall Regatta winners. S. Thomas’ College is in the lead with 24 victories, while Royal College has notched up 22 wins. There have been five draws over the years.

Royal College had a remarkable winning streak from 2015 to 2019 with five consecutive victories.
