An inaugurated the Aeronautical Information Management (AIM) System was launched by Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Aviation Nimal Siripala de Silva on October 10 at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), representing a much significant advancement in the delivery of Aeronautical Navigation Information Service. This state-of-the-art system was implemented at a cost of Rs. 1.2 billion.
This cutting-edge system empowers pilots, air traffic controllers, and airlines to provide and maintain a high-quality Aeronautical Navigation Information Service, which is indispensable for the safe, profitable, and efficient execution of flight operations.
Notably, the Top Sky Aeronautical Information Management (AIM) system made in France by Thales, will be fully operational at BIA from October 10, 2023. By implementing this new computer operating system, the Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP), widely regarded as the cornerstone of Aeronautical Information Service, will be easily accessible and updated using digital technology.
Furthermore, the adoption of this system elevates the quality and efficiency of the Aeronautical Information publication update process, ensuring a high degree of accuracy and precision in the associated database.
“As per the recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), flight operations conducted at Sri Lanka’s airstrip have been executed with a commendable emphasis on safety. Consequently, our airport has earned a notable evaluation from the ICAO, securing an impressive score of 92, establishing it as a leader in aviation operations across Southeast Asia,” the Minister said.
The Minister also emphasized that the utilization of state-of-the-art technical equipment has been pivotal in elevating Sri Lanka’s aviation services to a highly advanced level.
Moreover, pilots gain rapid access to all Pre-Flight Information Bulletins that impact their safety during flights. Additionally, they can receive updates to their Flight Plan concerning changes in other Flight Information Regions, leading to improved Flight Plan management.
Furthermore, the Aeronautical Information Service officer at the International NOTAM office will have greater ease in managing the exchange of temporary changes in Aeronautical Information Publication (NOTAM) referred to by pilots.
To optimize these operations, the new computer system at the Aeronautical Information Service Headquarters (AIS HQ) has received an Aeronautical Information Exchange Model Database (AIXM Database), which stands as a fundamental component of the Aeronautical Information Service.
The Department of Electronic and Air Navigation Engineering played a pivotal role in achieving these remarkable milestones.
