The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment has reported that during the first nine months of 2024, Rs.1,056 lakh (Rs.105.6 million) were awarded as compensation to victims of foreign job scams. This compensation followed the prosecution of individuals and unlicenced agencies involved in fraudulent foreign employment schemes. These actions were the result of special raids and investigations prompted by complaints received by the Bureau, under the guidance of Deputy General Manager of the Bureau’s Legal Department, Nelum Samarasekera.

From January to September, 570 cases were filed in Court against foreign employment fraudsters. The Bureau received 3,351 complaints, of which 1,177 were resolved. Moreover, the Special Investigation Division conducted 19 raids, resulting in the arrest of 104 individuals, including representatives from 17 licenced employment agencies.

The Bureau has urged the public to be cautious and avoid paying money to fraudsters offering employment in countries such as Israel, South Korea, Japan, Romania, and Canada without proper verification. They also encourage reporting any known cases of fraud to the Bureau’s hotline 1989.
