Rs.157 Mn WB assistance for Walawa South Bank rehabilitation project

The Walawa South Bank rehabilitation project was launched under the patronage of Irrigation, Wildlife and Forestry Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi at the Chandrika Wewa, Gangeyaya Division recently.

The International Development Fund of the World Bank (WB) will provide Rs.157 million for the project.

This main canal runs from Udawalawe to Angunakolapalassa and is 50 kilometres long. It is planned to rehabilitate 16 kilometres up to Embilipitiya under the second phase.

Rehabilitations are to be completed within a year, and thereafter the canal will feed the three Mahaweli divisions – Chandrika Wewa, Murawasihena, and Angunakolapalassa thereby irrigating 12,000 hectares in Yala and Maha Seasons.

The rehabilitation will be carried out under the supervision of the Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority.

Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority DG Mahendra Abeywardana, Mahaweli land-use planning Director Indika Jayawardana, Walawa Residential Entrepreneurial Manager Sujeewa Gunasekara and several officials of the Mahaweli Authority participated in the opening of the Walawa South Bank rehabilitation project.
