Rs. 4,089.54 has been spent on the Gin-Nilwala Diversion Project under the Irrigation and Water Resources Management Ministry during the past eight years with no contribution to the country’s national economy, a Special Audit Report on the project issued by the National Audit Report reveals.

Notwithstanding the fact that the initial geological researches and surveying activities had been initiated in 2015 the respective project has been stopped in 2015. Subsequently, the affairs of the project had been handed over to the Irrigation Department. However, up to date, the work on the project has not been commenced.

Moreover, the Feasibility Study Report on the project has been submitted in 2020 to the Irrigation and Water Resources Management Department. The Audit Report states that it had been difficult to reach a consensus among the stakeholders. However, following the completion of the Feasibility Study on March 31, 2023 the respective report had been given to the Irrigation Department.

The work on the project had been halted on the odd occasions leading way to make it impossible to obtain required approvals for the Feasibility Study Report causing undesired delay in implementing the project. The above information was contained in the Audit Report issued pertaining to the performance of Irrigation Department for 2023 by the National Audit Office.
