A total of Rs.6.5 million have been fined to 170 traders who sold rice at a higher price in the last few days, said the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA).
They stated that they are continuing its operations with additional teams to identify traders selling rice at increased prices.Special raids were conducted in several areas including Mahanuwara, Mawanella, Peradeniya, Gelioya, Gampola, Udunuwara, Nawalapitiya, Ulapane, Tennekumbura, Kundasale, Digana and Kadugannawa yesterday (28). During these raids, legal action was taken against 25 traders, including two companies, who were found selling rice at higher prices.
Recently, CAA took action against 170 traders for selling rice at increased prices. In yesterday’s Court proceedings, a company in Pettah accepted the charges and was fined Rs.750,000 while three individual businesses were fined Rs.250,000 each by the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court. Additionally, 10 traders in Matara district were fined Rs.100,000 each by the Morawaka Magistrate’s Court.
As a result, fines amounting to Rs.6.5 million have been imposed by the relevant Courts on traders selling rice at higher prices in the recent past. The operations to identify and take action against such traders continue uninterrupted, CAA added.
