Russian Ambassador in Colombo Levan S. Dzhagaryan said Russia has never meddled with internal affairs of Sri Lanka.
He said that Sri Lanka will hold Presidential Election this year and Russia hopes that future Government will also follow up independent neutral foreign policy and preserve the continuity of friendly relations with Russia regardless of the outcome of the election.
However, we hope the election would be held in peaceful manner promoting further enhancement of stability and growth and prosperity in Sri Lanka, the ambassador said.
The Russian Envoy was speaking at a reception hosted by the Russian Embassy in Colombo to mark the Russia Day at Galle Face Hotel on Tuesday.
Russia Day is being celebrated on June 12 to commemorate the adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty by the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic on the same day in 1990. The declaration’s adoption is regarded as the beginning of modern Russia.
Russia Sri Lanka Friendship Association Chairman and Education Minister Susil Premajayantha was the Chief Guest.
Ambassador Dzhagaryan said that the Russian – Sri Lankan relations provide a good example of sincere friendship and mutual understanding that can exist between two countries. “Our States have similar approaches to important foreign policy issues”, he said.
