Social activist Oshala Herath has submitted a letter to the Election Commission stating that by nominating Diana Gamage as an SJB National List Member knowing that she does not have Sri Lankan citizenship, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and SJB Secretary General Ranjith Madduma Bandara have violated the Parliamentary Elections Act No. 1 of 1981 and action should be taken against them.

Gamage was stripped of her parliamentary seat as a result of a case filed by Herath before the Supreme Court earlier on the same matter.

Oshala Herath says that he informed both Premadasa and Madduma Bandara in 2020 with clear evidence that Diana Gamage does not have Sri Lankan citizenship. Herath says that apart from notifying them about this, he named them as respondents in the relevant cases and the facts presented by them in those cases show that they knew very well that she did not have Sri Lankan citizenship.

He has further stated that Premadasa and Madduma Bandara have effectively aided and abetted Gamage’s crime by failing to report this issue to the Election Commission or to take legal action against Gamage.

Oshala Herath says that Diana Gamage, Sajith Premadasa and Ranjith Madduma Bandara have breached the Parliamentary Elections Act.

When asked about this, a Election Commission senior official said the letter received in this regard will be discussed during the next Commission meeting.
