Sajith’s 13th Amendment enforcement utterance will lead to separatism – NFF
The National Freedom Front (NFF) yesterday emphasised to Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa that the full enforcement of the 13th Amendment will only make the country a victim of separatism.
NFF National Organiser and MP Jayantha Samaraweera said that the country should not be made a victim of separatism by making various promises targeting the votes of the people of the Northern and Eastern provinces.
He said this at the press conference held yesterday at the head office of the NFF in Pitakotte.
He said that the Opposition Leader has made a firm and open statement addressing the people of the Northern Province that the 13th Amendment will be fully enforced. It is very clear that even the previous Opposition Leaders did not openly declare it because there was a strong opposition for it.
However that objection has not emerged strongly this time due to the current disaster situation in Sri Lanka.
However, it is very clear that he is making such a statement targeting the votes of the people of the Northern and Eastern Provinces.
We remember that when he presented the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution as a private member’s motion two clauses for the full implementation of the 13th Amendment’ were inserted in that amendment on the request of MP Sumanthiran.
We also remember that his father expressed his disapproval of the Indo-Lanka Agreement in 1987 earlier, but later raised his hand in favour of the 13th Amendment. But he did not declare that the 13th Amendment will be fully enforced at any time.
“He did not even try to do that as a President. We urge the Leader of the Opposition to look into the history of the 13th Amendment especially during his father’s tenure before issuing statements for narrow political interests,”the MP said.
