‘Sakwala’ programme will continue – Tissa

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Natioinal Organiser, Tissa Attanayaka said the ‘Sakwala’ educational programme will be continued for countrywide underprivileged schoolchildren.

Quoting a survey Attanayaka said a large number of schoolchildren in the country’s remote and rural sectors have so far not access either to the Internet or the digital smart boards and computers. He said so far the SJB has provided 377 smart class rooms which are equipped with digital smart boards and computers.

“Although we have currently stopped the ‘Sakwala’ educational equipment distribution programme due to the forthcoming Parliamentary Election, it will be continued,” he said.

He said in addition to digital equipment the SJB has also provided the schools with musical instruments for school bands and also sports gear to strengthen sports activities of children.

Attanayaka also said the SJB’s other objective is to improve the English Language skills of children which is immensely important for them to visit the global arena.

“To fulfil this objective the SJB has planned to set up English Language skills centres in every district,” he said.

Attanayaka also said the SJB is carrying out the programme with the support of local and international donors and they have so far donated millions worth of digital equipment to fulfil this objective. He also said in addition to digital equipment the SJB has so far donated a large number of buses to countrywide schools.
