Sarusara credit scheme for farmers to continue under Treasury

0 7

Cabinet Spokesman and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa yesterday said the Cabinet approved the implementation of “Sarusara,” a new Rural Credit Scheme, to support minor and small-scale farmers engaged in short-term crop cultivation and gardening.

Speaking to the media yesterday at the Government Information Department, Minister Jayatissa said this programme originally introduced in 2020 by the Rural Development Department under the Central Bank of Sri Lanka provided working capital assistance to farmers.

However, with the enactment of the new Central Bank Act, the Central Bank can no longer operate such concessionary loan schemes.

To ensure the continuity of this vital support for rural farmers, the Government has decided to relaunch “Sarusara” as an annual programme under the Development Finance Department of the Treasury starting in 2025.

The scheme is expected to empower small-scale farmers, promote rural development and strengthen the agricultural sector.
