0 4

The highly anticipated Battle of the Golds in the United Arab Emirates unfolded on November 11th 2023 at Eden Garden Grounds, Ajman, featuring arch-rivals St. Sebastian’s College (SEBS) and Prince of Wales College (PWC). This marked the eighth meeting between the old boys from the two schools in Moratuwa, continuing the tradition of the Big Match played in Sri Lanka.

The encounter showcased a blend of seasoned players and talented young cricketers, engaging in a competitive spectacle.

Winning the toss, Sebastianite skipper Ashan Jayasuiya chose to bat first. Sebs cautiously began their innings, scoring 39 runs for the loss of one wicket by the end of the power play. Supun Silva’s outstanding bowling, including a hat-trick (4 for 23 runs), posed a formidable challenge for Prince of Wales, earning him the title of the best bowler. Sensible batting by senior batsman Rayan Livera propelled Sebs to a total of 128 runs in 20 overs, securing Livera both the Best Batsman and Man of the Match awards.

In pursuit of a modest target, the Cambrians faced formidable bowling, with wickets falling at regular intervals. Shanesh Weerawansha contributed 38 runs for PWC but faced a critical run-out via a superb throw from Sebs fielder Kusal Fernando. The strategic bowling from Sebs intensified the tension, as the Cambrians found themselves needing 7 runs in the final over. Angelo Silva’s exceptional performance in the final over resulted in a tie, subsequently prompting a super over.

In the super over, the Cambrians scored 13 runs, but skipper Buddika Anurudda and his team couldn’t defend this total, leading to an exhilarating victory for SEBS.

Earlier in the day, Cambrians won the Veterans match, while the Sebastiaanite ladies’ team emerged victorious in the spouses’ battle. Dilshan Fernando captained the SEBS Veteran team, and Shanika Jayasuriya led the Sebastianite ladies’ team, while for Cambrians, Ashan Cooray captained the Veterans team, and Irangi Ushangika led the ladies’ team.
