The Mandalabiseka religious ceremony of the Seetha Amman Kovil of Nuwara Eliya was held on Saturday (6) with the participation of hundreds of local and foreign devotees.

The ceremonies commenced with a procession carrying the offerings and statues of Rama, Seetha, Lakshmana and Hanuman, that started from the town centre, and traversed the streets of Nuwara Eliya city. Prior to this Mandalabiseka festival, the Kumbhabhisheka festival, which is held every eight years, was held at Seetha Amman Kovil in Nuwara Eliya on May 19, with the participation of Hindu devotees from many countries including India and Nepal. A large number of Indian devotees also joined the Mandalabiseka festival too.

According to the Ramayana, which is read with great respect by Indian and local Hindu devotees, Hanuman, who came to find Seetha, who was brought by King Ravana 7,600 years ago, met Seetha at the place where the Seetha Amman Kovil of Nuwara Eliya is situated.

After the Kumbhabhiseka festival held on May 19 at the Nuwara Eliya Seetha Amman Kovil, which is believed to have been built about 150 years ago, the last great Puja called Mandalabhiseka festival of the 47-day long Pujas was held last Saturday (6).

Simultaneously, the special stone pillar was brought to Sri Lanka from the Rama Temple in Ayodhya Temple of India, believed to be the birthplace of Lord Rama, to place in the Seetha Amman Kovil. Besides, a stone plaque brought from Janakpur, Nepal (birthplace of Goddess Seetha) was placed in the Kovil here, said Nuwara Eliya MP V. Radhakrishnan.

“The procession carrying the offerings and statues of Rama, Seetha, Lakshmana and Hanuman visited the Seetha Amman Temple after touring the streets of Nuwara Eliya. The third Kumbhabhisheka festival, which is held once in eight years, was held with the participation of nearly two thousand Hindu devotees from many countries including India and Nepal,” Radhakrishnan added.
