Peradeniya University’s Veterinary Faculty senior professor Dr. Ashoka Dangolla said female elephant Seetha, who was shot and injured while being taken to participate in the annual Esala Perahara festival at the Mahiyangana Rajamaha viharaya has developed some complications.
He said that the elephant is currently kept in an elephant owner’s garden in the Ranawana area and her stomach has got swollen and she is having trouble sleeping.
He also emphasised that several surgeries will be performed within the next three days based on a court order to remove the rest of the metal pieces from her body.
Dr. Dangolla further said that the complications that were not seen at the time of her injury are now emerging and they are paying attention to that and taking counter measures.
