The Election Commission has banned former Mayor of Kurunegala Thushara Sanjeeva Witharana to vote at national elections for seven years from 2024 to 2032, taking into account several allegations levelled against him.
Kurunegala Deputy Elections Commissioner Harendra Bandara Ratnayake has notified these recommendations following a complaint made by Kurunegala businessman Priyankara Liyanage to the Election Commission against former Kurunegala Mayor Thushara Sanjeeva Witharana. Liyanage has informed the Election Commission through his complaint that Thushara Sanjeeva Witharana has been found guilty before Court for the charge of demolishing the historical Bhuvanekabahu Rajasabha Mandapa in Kurunegala.
He has also been found guilty by the Commission appointed by the former North Western Province Governor Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda and dismissed from the position of Kurunegala Mayor.
Taking into account the complaint and according to the recommendations given by the Deputy Election Commissioner, Electoral Commission has decided that his registered name is unfit to continue to be kept in the Electoral Roll as a voter in accordance with Article 89 of the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to be read with Section 2 of the Voters Registration Act No. 44 of 1980 Deputy Election Commissioner has informed that the former Mayor’s name cannot be mentioned in the electoral roll continuously until 2032.
