The Sri Lankan woman who received the largest compensation (Rs.6.8 million) given to a Sri Lankan migrant worker employed as a domestic aide in the Middle East, arrived at Katunayake International Airport from Kuwait on Sunday (3). The 32-year-old woman, a resident of Mahiyangana, had been sexually abused by her employer’s son, in Kuwait. Consequently, she had become pregnant. Later, her employer had secretly brought a doctor home and performed an abortion on her. He had also threatened her not to reveal the incident to anybody. However, when her health deteriorated after the abortion, her employer had taken her to the airport and given her an air-ticket to return to Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, the airline officials had refused to take her on board, due to her condition, and later informed the Sri Lankan embassy.
The Sri Lankan embassy had filed legal action against the employer in Kuwait and, after a lengthy legal battle, the court had offered her the compensation.
