Six new meet records on second day

On the second day of the All Island Schools Games held at the Sugathadasa Stadium on Tuesday, six new meet records were set in an impressive display of talent.

Asian Games gold medalist Tharushi Karunaratne, representing Walala A Ratnayake Central College in the Central Province, competed in the Under-20 400m finals. In her last appearance at the All Island School Games, she achieved a remarkable feat by clocking an impressive time of 53.21 seconds, establishing a new meet record and securing the gold medal. She broke her own record of 54.22 set in the last edition in 2022.

Additionally, Dilki Karunaratne from Visakha Vidyalaya in the Western Province clinched a gold medal in the girls’ Under-14 shot put final, setting a new meet record with a distance of 11.47 meters. She erased the previous record of 10.34 metres set by Sachini Samaranayake of St Bridget’s Convent in 2019.

In the under-16 girls 100m final, Dhananjana Fernando of Lyceum International School Wattala also made a mark by setting a new meet record with a time of 12.62 seconds.

Long jumper Dilini Rajapaksha in the Under-14 girls shot put final, also from Lyceum International School Wattala, showcased her talent by achieving a record-breaking distance of 5.66 meters, marking the fourth new meet record set by girls during the five-day competition.

Adding to Jayavi Alwis’ Under-20 shot put record from day one, two more new meet records were established in the boys category, by Thevindu Sandil of St. Peter’s College Colombo and MC Karunaratne of Galamuna Maha Vidyalaya in Polonnawaruwa. Sandil recorded a distance of 7.27 meters in the Under-18 long jump final, and Karunaratne achieved a remarkable 7.52 meters in the Under-20 long jump final, both winning gold medals.
