Member of Parliament Dayasiri Jayasekara said that under a Samagi Jana Sandhanaya (SJS) government that will be formed in the future, the country’s morality, civility and religious freedom will be protected.
He said that some presidential candidates are plotting to turn Sri Lanka into a secular state through their election manifestos. He added that these candidates want to legalise prostitution and pass same-sex marriage laws.
Under Article 9 of the Constitution, there are constitutional provisions to give priority to Buddhism and to protect other religious freedoms also. However, he pointed out that it is regrettable that some candidates are trying to make Sri Lanka a secular state by amending this ninth article. “Until now, no one has touched the 9th Article of the constitution. But unfortunately, some presidential candidates are working to amend the constitution and turn the country into a non-religious state,” Jayasekara said.

The constitution of the country protects the freedom of religious rights of all religions. He said that although there is no obstacle for any person to practice his or her religion, it is surprising that some presidential candidates are working to turn ruin this.
Jayasekara further said that the SJS government is committed to protecting the safety and rights of the employees and will stand against the anti-employee measures.
However, he pointed out that the SJS government does not hesitate to take necessary measures to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of government institutions.
He said that some structural changes may be made to increase the effectiveness of government institutions as a responsible group that loves the country. Commenting on state taxation, he said that state taxation should be streamlined. He stated that while he was a member of the COPA committee, many weaknesses in the state tax revenue collection process were discovered. He said that the entire customs department is getting discredited because of a few corrupt officials in the institution. Such an irregularity of tax collection was reported in the process of purchasing twelve cranes for the Colombo port, he added.
