SL students, employees in Bangladesh safe – Ministry

The Foreign Affairs Ministry emphasizes that Sri Lankan students studying in the country’s universities and Sri Lankan workers are safe despite the unrest in Bangladesh.

Ministry Director General Niluka Kadurugamuwa said that 53 Sri Lankan students are currently in Bangladesh and that each student is being closely monitored by the Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dharmapala Weerakkody and the Sri Lankan High Commissioner’s office.

However, taking into account the current situation, he mentioned that nine Sri Lankan students have arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday. He also mentioned that the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka has informed the relevant University administrations to assure the safety and welfare of Sri Lankan students.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry also states that the Sri Lankan students are able to stay safely in the hostels due to the fact that the Bangladesh Government has not requested foreign students to leave the country.

The Ministry said that there are about 3,000 Sri Lankan workers in Bangladesh and no problem has arisen regarding their security so far.
