SLBFE warns Lankan job seekers in Korea of potential job scams

0 16

The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) yesterday revealed potential job scams targeting Sri Lankan individuals seeking employment in South Korea under the E-8 visa category. The Bureau warned prospective Korean job seekers that no jobs are offered on the E-8 Visa category and advised people to avoid falling victim to fraudulent recruitment practices.

According to the SLBFE, a fraudulent scheme is being carried out by claiming that short-term employment (Seasonal Worker) will be provided in South Korea under the E-8 visa category. Additional General Manager (International Affairs) at the SLBFE, Gamini Senarath Yapa said that, agreements should be entered into between the two governments of South Korea and Sri Lanka in order to obtain short-term employment in South Korea and such an agreement has not yet been entered into.

He said, “Since 2004, Sri Lankans have been sent to work in South Korea under the EPS-E9 visa category. In addition, the private sector has referred individuals for the job of welding (welder) in South Korea under the E7-4 visa category in the past. We also looked into sending workers under the E-8 visa category for short-term employment (Seasonal Worker) in South Korea. It was revealed that it is necessary that Provincial Councils in Sri Lankan enter into relevant agreements with the relevant states of South Korea to send workers for short-term jobs in South Korea.

The Government of Sri Lanka has not yet taken any decision to send workers to work in South Korea under this E-8 visa category and has not reached any agreement so far. Accordingly, workers are not referred under the E-8 visa category for agricultural and fishing jobs. We have received information that various people are engaged in fake job schemes by promising individuals to provide jobs in South Korea under the E-8 visa category.

The SLBFE emphasizes that the Sri Lankan government does not implement any recruitment programme under this Visa category”.
