Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) General Secretary Duminda Dissanayake MP yesterday said the SLFP had decided to back President Ranil Wickremesinghe at the upcoming Presidential Election as it is important to maintain the current momentum in the nation’s economic progress.

Speaking to journalists he said, “We need to take this momentum forward. We cannot stop and allow another crisis to happen. We need to support President Wickremesinghe who revived the country’s economy in the short span of two years. We need to carry this momentum forward to usher greater economic prosperity.”

Dissanayake said the SLFP will mobilize its party machinery islandwide and will support in collective efforts with other political parties and groups and also will launch the party’s own campaign to ensure President Wickremesinghe’s victory at the upcoming polls.

Dissanayake said under the President’s guidance Sri Lanka was able to defer all bilateral loan installment payments until 2028 and furthermore got the opportunity to repay all the loans on concessional terms, with an extended period until 2043.

“We successfully completed the restructuring of domestic and bilateral debt with foreign countries giving the country much needed breathing space for economic rejuvenation. This is because the President was able to restore international confidence in our country.”

Dissanayake further said, “Two years back our country’s economy was in a dire state. Many were hesitant to step forward to help rescue the nation. The President accepted the challenge without any preconditions and saved the country and its people from the economic abyss.”

Dissanayake went on to say that Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake engage in populist or partisan rhetoric, displaying a limited understanding of economic and political dynamics.

“Their actions reveal a culture of opportunism, driven solely by ambitions for personal gain and political positioning,” he said.

On the contrary, Dissanayake said the President fully understood the issues at hand, offered practical solutions, and delivered results.

The SLFP General Secretary also said the President contesting as an independent candidate instead of coming forward as a candidate from his party allows political parties and groups to support him without any political affiliations.

He said the SLFP has always taken decisions thinking about the country’s future at decisive moments in history while setting its party political ambitions aside, and this time too, the SLFP has taken a similar decision thinking about the country’s well-being.
