‘SLFP will put forward broad national programme soon’
Colombo district SLFP organizer Fawzan Anwer yesterday said the SLFP will soon put before the public a “broad national programme” which could benefit the country and the people.
Speaking to the Daily News, he said the SLFP will embark on a new journey as a strong and powerful party.
Anwer said the SLFP will invite likeminded political entities to join hands. In future elections, the SLFP will only give nominations to candidates with a clean slate in order to end corruption and violence in the political system.
SLFP Muslim leaders such as Badi-u-din Mohammed, Haleem Ishaq, Alavi Moulana, I.A. Cader and others had always fought for the introduction of candidates with a clean record at elections.
Anwer who is also a former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Palestine said that since the present electoral system was introduced in 1978, during the tenure of former President J.R. Jayewardene, SLFP leaders had engaged in numerous efforts to bring back a system which ensures a Parliament member for every electorate.
He also said that amendments should be brought to the 20th Amendment to make it more people friendly.
The SLFP will strive to provide viable answers to the above issues as well as the current economic crisis and other issues the country is facing, in their new programme. The current SLFP leadership has wide support from both the majority community and minority communities.
The SLFP always had enjoyed wide support from the international community irrespective of differences. These will stand in good stead for the future aspirations of the party, Anwer said.
