Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) Leader Rauff Hakeem has expressed his belief that forming a National Government, after the upcoming General Election, is crucial to pulling the country out of its current Economic crisis. He emphasised this as his personal view, but expects the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) leadership to agree.

Addressing a press conference in Kandy on Monday (14), Hakeem highlighted the importance of unity, stating that the SLMC, as a constituent Party of the SJB, intends to contest in 7 Districts, collaborating with the SJB in most, but going solo in Districts such as Ampara and Batticaloa, with the aim of securing 4 additional Parliamentary seats.

Hakeem noted that Parliamentary Elections differ greatly from Presidential ones, and even though the National People’s Power (NPP) might gain significant votes, he does not believe they will secure a majority.

He argued that a capable and experienced Parliament is necessary, and pointed out shortcomings within the NPP’s Candidte list, stating that it lacks well-known and skilled political figures. Hakeem stressed that, while any government should be supported in its efforts to stabilise the country post-election, a strong Opposition is vital for the health of democracy. He also expressed concern over the current government’s unfulfilled promises and reiterated the need for accountability regarding the Easter Sunday attacks, mentioning that further investigations were being called for without substantial progress.

Hakeem concluded by urging voters to use their ballots wisely, reflecting on past experiences where two-thirds majorities in Parliament led to the country’s Economic decline. His goal for Kandy is for the SJB to secure 7 Parliamentary seats, pushing for reform and change.
