D. A. Dharmasena of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) became the Chairman of the Gangawata Koralaya Pradeshiya Sabha, earlier held under the United National Party (UNP). The election of a new chairman was held yesterday (18) under the patronage of Central Province Local Government Commissioner Menaka Herath at the Pradeshiya Sabha hall.

Since the Budget of the Pradeshiya Sabha was not adopted on two occasions, it was considered that the former chairman Subash Yatawara had vacated his post and according to the Act on Local Governance, Central Province Governor Lalith U.Gamage had appointed the deputy chairman as acting chairman.

The election for the appointment of a new chairman was held yesterday (18). Nine members of the SLPP, two members of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and two members from the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and one member from the UNP were present.

Former chairman Subash Yatawara and the eight UNP members were not present for the election.

Chaminda Karunaratne of the SLPP proposed the name of D. M. Dharmasena for the post of chairman and it was seconded by M.Chamikara of the same Party.

Since no one else came forward to contest the post of chairman, the Commissioner of Local Government did not hold a vote and appointed member Dharmasena as the chairman of the Gangawata Koralaya Pradeshiya Sabha.

The former chairman had locked the chairman’s office and taken the keys and as a result, the new chairman had to break the lock to enter the room.
