SLPP names Namal as candidate

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organizer MP Namal Rajapaksa has been named as the party candidate for the upcoming 2024 Presidential Election.

SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam announced the decision yesterday morning (7) at the party headquarters in Nelum Mawatha, Battaramulla at a special ceremony that was held to make the official announcement of the SLPP Presidential candidate. Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, founder of the SLPP Basil Rajapaksa and many other party members participated in the event. The SLPP political committee recently took steps to announce a separate candidate from the SLPP to contest in the upcoming Presidential Election.

The decision to nominate MP Namal Rajapaksa as the SLPP Presidential candidate followed in the aftermath of businessman

and SLPP MP Dhammika Perera who was tipped to be the SLPP Presidential candidate earlier, in a letter addressed to the SLPP party Secretary General Sagara Kariyawasam yesterday had informed his decision to withdraw from the candidacy due to personal reasons.
