SLPP to support Ranil’s candidacy

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) yesterday decided to extend support to Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe at the election to be held in Parliament on July 20 to elect a new President.

SLPP General Secretary and Parliamentarian Sagara Kariyawasam said that the party will not support Parliamentarian Dullas Alahapperuma’s candidacy as his decision to contest for the Presidency is against the party’s decision.

Meanwhile, a majority of SLPP Parliamentarians have raised their opposition over the alleged consensus reached between Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and Parliamentarian Dullas Alahapperuma.

It was discussed at a Party Leaders Meeting in Colombo yesterday that Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa should be nominated as a candidate for the Premiership.

However, Parliamentarian Vasudeva Nanayakkara has opposed the move.
