SL,Vietnam sign memorandum of understanding for agricultural technology exchange work plan

A memorandum of understanding between the governments of Sri Lanka and VietNam was signed yesterday (21) regarding a number of issues leading to the development of the agricultural sector in both countries.

The Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industry Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera and the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of Viet Nam Mr. Minh Hoan Le started bilateral discussions between the two countries yesterday (21) in conjunction with the 37th Asia Pacific Conference of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.

As a result of those discussions, the two countries signed this MoU regarding a number of issues including the exchange of agricultural technology. Under this, the agreement was signed in relation to several matters such as agricultural technology, studies and research, exchange of experience, advanced seed production, application of fertilizers and pesticides, and training of farmers and officials so that they can get more yield.

Mr. Minh Hoan Le, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of Viet Nam, who expressed his opinion, expressed his happiness regarding the fact that Sri Lanka has now become self-sufficient in rice. He also stated that Sri Lanka’s potential in food production should be appreciated even though it is in a difficult economic period.

The Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, who expressed his opinion, said that although many people assumed that there was a food shortage in Sri Lanka due to the economic collapse, the people of Sri Lanka did not face a food crisis due to the measures taken by the government and the farmers despite the obstacles. He also said that the people should express the gratitude of the Sri Lankan farmers.

Several government officials of our country as well as Vietnamese government officials participated in this event.
