The Mount Lavinia Criminal Investigation Division said that the Customs and the Motor Vehicle Registration Department have been informed and investigations are being carried out on smuggled duty-free high-powered motorcycles. Police said that imported high-powered motorcycle engines and chassis parts worth nearly Rs.300 million were found hidden in a back room of a garage in Batakettara, Piliyandala. The raid was carried out according to information received by the acting OIC of the Mount Lavinia Criminal Investigation Division, IP Amila Govinna that a person running a garage was illegally selling high-powered motorcycles, which are prohibited from being registered in Sri Lanka.
Four high-powered motorcycles, four high-powered engines and four high-powered motorcycle chassis, including a high-powered BMW motorcycle made in Australia with an engine capacity of 1000 cc were taken into police custody.
During the questioning of the person running the garage, it has been stated that these were brought through a friend abroad.
Police also said that they obtained statements from the twenty-five-year-old garage owner. Under the instructions of Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of Mount Lavinia Division Mangala Dehideniya and SP Saman Jayasekara, Acting OIC Mount Lavinia Criminal Investigation Division Inspector Amila Govinna are conducting investigations.
