Speaker says no obstacle to consult Courts on any Bill
Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena told Parliament yesterday (22) that there is no obstacle for anyone to go to the Supreme Court against a proposal for any Bill. The Speaker said this when Colombo District MP Wimal Weerawansa raised a question in this regard.
MP Weerawansa said as the Speaker said when there is a case about the Provident Fund, something passed in this Parliament cannot be challenged in Court. If a Bill was passed, it is a different matter. A proposal is a proposal, he said. Why is it said that just because a resolution is passed here, it cannot be challenged in court?. The Speaker said that the issue has been discussed several times before. We took legal advice. There is no need to elaborate on that. There is no obligation to change the decision.
