Special State Pardon for 285 Prisoners

A special state pardon has been granted to 285 prisoners on the occasion of Independence Day, which falls tomorrow (04).Six of them are women.

The prisoners have been granted this special amnesty in accordance with the powers vested in the President by Article 34-1 of the Constitution.

Prisoners imprisoned for minor offences are entitled to this freedom and the highest number of prisoners, 33, will be released tomorrow from Wariyapola Prison, said Commissioner of Prisons (Media Spokesperson) Gamini.B. Dissanayake.

These 285 male and female prisoners from 29 prison institutions in the country are scheduled to be released tomorrow, Independence Day.
