Sri Lanka’s top squash players, Ravindu Laksiri and Nevindu Lakman, set off from the island yesterday. Their destination: the 9th Sunil Verma Memorial Tournament in Thane, India, a tournament running from December 19 to 23.

Laksiri and Lakman, both formidable athletes in the country’s squash scene, rank among the top three players nationally. Laksiri, the reigning national champion, holds the top spot, while Lakman secures an impressive third place.

This PSA Challenger Tournament, hosting a total of 24 players, boasts a prize fund of USD 3,000. Laksiri, Sri Lanka’s leading squash player, is seeded second in the competition, with India’s Veer Chotrani claiming the coveted top seed. Lakman is seeded sixth, making him a strong contender.

Notably, the other 22 participants are all from India. Sharing his aspirations before departing, Laksiri, who recently clinched the national title for the 11th consecutive year, expressed his hopes of winning the trophy and improving his world rankings. The DS Senanayake College Old Boys’ Union is providing support for Laksiri’s tour. Likewise, Lakman, sponsored by Vidullanka PLC, will take part in this PSA tournament after an impressive performance in the Senior National Squash Championship last Sunday.

Before hitting the courts in Thane, both players will receive coaching at Ritwik’s Start Academy in Mumbai. This strategic preparation aims to fine-tune their skills and strategies for the challenging competition that lies ahead at the 9th Sunil Verma Memorial Trophy.
