Sri Lanka’s police said they are investigating alleged death threats against the country’s public security minister and his deputy, reportedly linked to a stepped-up crackdown on drug trafficking.
Police said the threats were directed at Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala and Deputy Minister Attorney-at-Law Sunil Watagala.
According to police, the threats came to light following intelligence information received from the Avissawella area. The Criminal Investigation Department has launched a broad investigation into the matter.
The disclosure was made at a media briefing held at the Police Media Division.
Senior Deputy Inspector General in charge of the Western Province Sajeewa Medawatte, Deputy Inspector General in charge of the Legal Division Attorney-at-Law Jaliya Senarathne, Deputy Inspector General in charge of the Narcotics Division Asoka Dharmasena and Police Media Spokesman Assistant Superintendent of Police Attorney-at-Law Fredrick Wootler attended the briefing.
